Job Description

Primary Function:

  • Perform those duties necessary to and involving the installation, repair, maintenance and alterations of all general electrical systems, devices, and equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • Inspects and tests electrical lighting, signal, communication and power circuits and equipment.
  • Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment using testing instruments such as ammeter, ohmmeter, voltmeter, testing lamp or growler.
  • Installs new wiring and electrical machinery. Studies blueprints and diagrams to ascertain layout, location and specifications of items to be installed. Cuts and shapes conduit with hand tools and fastens it in place with brackets or similarly installs armored cable. Fastens fixtures, switches and outlet boxes in position. Runs wire through conduit and makes connections to complete circuits. Assembles, installs and connects components to switchboards and distribution panels and connects them to units controlled.
  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of the University.

Other Functions and Competencies:

  • Combined responsibilities of testing and running of emergency generators along with Plant Operations personnel
  • Understand, maintain and repair HVAC systems electrical controls and chiller electrical controls up to and including main disconnect.
  • Be able to calculate and install equipment in accordance with specifications of National Electrical Code.
  • Maintains records as required.

Educational/Training Requirements:

High School diploma or GED required.

Experience Requirements:

Minimum of three (3) yearsrsquo; experience in the electrical field, along with 600 hours of schooling in an approved school required. Or, in lieu of schooling, a minimum of four (4) yearsrsquo; experience working as an electrician for a commercial contractor or equivalent is required.
