Career Insights
Read what some of the members of The Early Agency have to say about their careers:

Eben SalesEbe H. Sales, Financial Representative
Before I became a Financial Representative, I was President of a construction business. I desired a business which involved my choosing the client to have a relationship with as opposed to being directed who, what, and where to solicit business. I also wanted to continue the freedom of taking time off for my kids’ events.

The Rewards
The greatest rewards in this career:

  • To participate on a relatively equal basis with many diversified individuals as they pass through 28 years of challenges, growth, reverses, and successes.
  • To be able to afford the time to assist, over a twelve year period, a 50-year-old single woman on Social Security taking care of her elderly mother with regular food-bank deliveries, then assisting her to break free from a financially abusive roommate and move into a homeless shelter for three weeks and finally into permanent housing.
  • The friendships developed over the years with other Financial Representatives, especially the early morning pre-meeting breakfasts.

Career Advice
Partner with another person. The test knowledge for all the required lines of past business is perhaps overwhelming. The jack of all trades is a thing of the past.

Our history of success differentiates Northwestern Mutual from the others in the financial services business. For instance in 1982 or 1983, we increased our annuity payout to holders of certain lifetime benefits. Other companies pocketed the difference. I wouldn’t trade this career for anything else.

John Van GrinsvenJohn R. Van Grinsven, Financial Representative
Before being recruited by my Financial Representative with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, I was in sales and marketing with a Fortune 30 company, then in sales and marketing for a $300 million company.

I find the greatest rewards in this career are being home every night for dinner with my family, the opportunity to help people with the correlation of assets, and the fact that people thank me for the work that I do.

I haven’t had any insurance claims yet, but I know my work makes a difference because several times I’ve helped people quantify and qualify their needs and wants. It’s a simple business but not easy work. The greatest challenges are the ups and downs emotionally, the lack of respect some people have for others’ time and efforts, and their lack of integrity to be honest.

Early in the career, the biggest challenge is the unevenness of income stream, and sometimes the loneliness of working independently. Along the way, I have learned I have a long way to go as a business owner and that I do not manage my time as much as I thought I did or could.

Career Milestones and Advice
I achieved placement in the Million Dollar Round Table in my first calendar year and I will achieve Forum membership by 2007. Remember this is a marathon. Do what your mentors tell you. Our company is unique because of our exclusive distribution system. With this career, I wish I started earlier; but it’s never too late.

Whether you know where your college education is taking you or you're still keeping your options open, you owe it to yourself to see if Northwestern Mutual Financial Network's Internship program with The Early Agency is right for you.

As you learn by doing, you'll find that the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship Program is an intense and according to our alumni -- unparalleled learning experience. Expect the process to be rewarding, educational and an opportunity for you to narrow your career search.

Our internships provide a great chance for students to combine what they've learned in the classroom with a real-life look into what they could truly make of themselves. You'll have the chance to work in a real-world business environment and earn performance-based compensation.

The ambition of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship program has been less to sell our financial products than to develop people. As a Financial Representative College Intern, you will enjoy the benefit of working with The Early Agency where you'll receive outstanding guidance, superior support and quality expertise.

As full-time college students, interns generally work 15 to 20 hours per week developing business- and client-building skills. In most ways, our interns follow the same process for establishing their careers as our Financial Representatives.

Our internship offers you invaluable business experience that you will take with you far into your career. But that's just the start of the impact this can have on your future and your present.

Consider these benefits:

  • Practical guidance in your career selection process
  • The chance to develop your networking and business relationship skills
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Securities license, state licenses for life, health and accident insurance opportunities and a head start program for a career as a full-time Financial Representative
  • Compensation in the same manner as a full-time Financial Representative.
  • Actual business experience for your resume.
  • Test drive the Financial Representative career.

Regardless of what you do after graduation, you'll have a foundation of skills and knowledge to build your career upon. One out of three former interns becomes a full-time Financial Representative upon graduation. These graduates have built a solid foundation for immediate and future career success.

The two-thirds who choose other career paths benefit as well. They launch their career with stronger business-building skills and a clearer sense of where they want their career to take them.

After completing the internship, the knowledge you have gained, coupled with the opportunity to work for The Early Agency as a full-time Financial Representative, can lead you to a profitable and fulfilling future.
